Accent walls are a great way to make a statement in your home. It is usually best to paint all of the open areas of the home with a neutral color and then decide which walls should be painted with an accent color and how much of a statement you want to make with each color. If the home is large with many sections you could do several accent walls. However if it is a smaller home and all of the community living space can be seen from a central area (such as a great room) it is better to have only one accent wall. In a larger home I would have one accent wall in the formal living room or dining room area and another in the family room area. A great color for the formal dining room is red. This is a very warm stately color and goes very well with tan. For example you could have a formal dining room with one red wall or a red ceiling and the other walls could be a light neutral tan. In a family room or a less formal area a color that is surprisingly beautiful is a dark brown. You have to play with this to find the right brown but many people say that must be “just plain ugly” then when they see it they love the look. I suggest getting several test colors and painting 3 ft. by 3 ft. sections of the wall until you find the color you like. If you want more ideas, this is a good place to look:
Good luck and just remember that an accent wall is a great inexpensive decorating idea to bring life to an otherwise neutral décor. And if you want to change that is easy and inexpensive too; it’s just a few walls to paint.
